Abstract

Projects by Winka Dubbeldam / Archi-Tectonics, Frank Lupo / Daniel Rowen, Herzog & De Meuron, Diller + Socfidio, Hariri & Hariri, MVRDV, Michael Bell, Bernard Tschumi, Shigeru Ban, Michael Maltzan, François de Menil, Scogin Elam and Bray, Farjadi Farjadi Architects, Rem Koolhaas / OMA, Xaveer De Geyter Architectenbureau, Joel Sanders, Preston Scott Cohen, Simon Ungers with Thomas Kinslow, Thomas Hanrahan and Victoria Meyers, Kolatan / Mac Donald Studio, Clorindo Testa, SANAA / Kazuyo Sejima / Ryue Nishizawa & Associates, UN Studio / Van Berkel & Bos, Guthrie + Buresh Architects, Neil M. Denari, Steven Holl Architects. This book looks at twenty-six houses by an international roster of contemporary architects. Responding to recent innovations in architecture and changing cultural conditions, these designs represent a transformation of the traditional notion of the private house. In a provocative essay, Terence Riley, examines the influence of social phenomena - such as current demographic patterns, the shifting boundary between private and public realms, and new concepts of work and leisure - on house design. Featured are houses with open, loftstyle spaces and flexible interiors, adaptable to varying family needs. Others interweave living and working spaces. Because of the rapid growth of digital media, the house today can be a permeable structure, receiving and transmitting images, sound, language and data.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Bold and unconventional ideas are called for if the intention is to steer the debate on temporary accommodation for refugees in a new direction offering high-quality solutions. From eccentric experiments all the way to projects which have already been realised, international design teams present their work between the twin poles of unconventional developments and life-saving shelters in this compilation of case studies, Container and Modular Buildings. Not all of these are applicable to the current refugee crisis, since that which digital nomads find hip constitutes harsh reality for others. Yet alongside playful follies, we can find miniature architectural structures for the homeless as well as outpatient medical stations which offer a response to social problems and space shortages. The photographic material puts forward ideas as to how more can be done than the mere assembling of containers.

Abstract

Building in existing fabric generates world-wide more than half of design commissions. This book gives an advanced student / young practitioners introduction to a creative segment : Adaptive Reuse -- the adaptation of existing structure to accommodate new functions, users and contexts. Comprised are the cultural, design, planning down to the construction phases of adaptive reuse, extending beyond architecture also into interior design. Building in existing fabric requires more than practical solutions and stylistic skills. The adaptive reuse of buildings, where changes in the structure go along with new programs and functions, poses the fundamental question of how the past should be included in the design for the future. Using vivid imagery from Frankenstein to Rem Koolhaas, the author provides a comprehensive introduction to architectural design for adaptive reuse projects.
